Obituary of John Baker Dawson

John Baker Dawson, 86, husband of Helyn McKinney Dawson, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at his home on Winyah Bay.
Born on October 19, 1927, in Maricopa County, Arizona, he was a son of the late Harry Eaton Dawson, Sr. and the late Mary Marguerite Baker Dawson. Mr. Dawson was raised in Mt. Pleasant and moved to Georgetown in the early 1950’s. Mr. Dawson was a United States Air Force veteran having served as a fighter pilot in the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He was one of the youngest members of the Acro Jets, the first jet aircraft acrobatic team and forerunner to the Thunderbirds. Mr. Dawson was a partner with Dawson Lumber Company for many years and was the owner of Pawleys Island Lumber until his retirement. He was a charter member of Wayne United Methodist Church and a member of the Williams Sunday School class. Mr. Dawson was also a charter member of the Winyah Bay Archery Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; four children, Dawn Marguerite Dawson Chase (Sanborn) of Pawleys Island, John B. “Duff” Dawson, Jr. (Liz) of Georgetown, Dean H. Dawson (Beth) of Georgetown and Damon E. Dawson (Cori) of Georgetown; nine grandchildren, Baker Dawson (Wendy), Ramsay Dawson (Kathy), Sandra Cannon (Tad), Kloo Hansen (Andy), Betsy Crosby, Witte Crosby, Julie Dawson, Carson Dawson and DJ Dawson; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Clara B. Antley of Mt. Pleasant and June Svedberg of Georgetown; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jack Crosby; a great granddaughter, Mary Kate Dawson; step mother, Louise Dawson Murrell; four brothers, Harry Dawson, Jr., Marvin Dawson, Calvin Dawson and Danny Dawson.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Friday, September 26, 2014 at Wayne United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Chamblee officiating. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
