Obituary of Mary Lee Smith
Mary Lee Bookhart Smith, 87, widow of Ben Lamply Smith, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at her residence.
A funeral service officiated by, Rev. Vickie S. Powell, will be held Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2PM at Trinity Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1-2PM. Interment will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
Born in Branchville, SC on November 18, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Daniel William Bookhart and the late Merle Dorothy Berry Bookhart.
Mrs. Smith was a 1946 Winyah High graduate and an employee of Sears and Roebuck for over 37 years. She enjoyed volunteering at Georgetown Memorial Hospital and had over 13 years of service. Mrs. Smith was the last surviving charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitching, and knitting. She was a member of a charity organization called Caring Crafters of Trinity that donated handmade lap robes to cancer patients. Mrs. Smith never met a stranger and her warm personality will be missed by her many friends and family.
Surviving are one son, Benjamin Lee Smith of North, SC; four grandsons, William Benjamin Smith (Nakia) of North, SC, Chuck Smith (Kerri) of Highpoint, NC, Robert Smith (Jaci) of Trinity, NC, Chad Smith of Greensboro, NC; two great granddaughters, Natalie Lorraine Smith and June Melinda Smith; two special nieces and caregivers, Judy Bookhart Lewis (Larry) of Georgetown, SC and Karen E. Harrelson of Georgetown, SC; two nieces, Amy Avant (Derrick) of Walterboro, SC and Melody Etheridge (Jackie) of Branchville, SC; a number of great grandchildren; and an ex-daughter in law, Nancy G. Smith of Orangeburg .
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Charles Edwin Smith; two brothers, John W. Bookhart and George Howard Bookhart; and a sister, Dorothy Harrelson.
