Obituary of JoAnn Shoman

Please share a memory of JoAnn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

JoAnn Shoman, 88, known to her friends as Momma Jo, went to her eternal home on January 12, 2018 at her home in Georgetown, South Carolina. With her five children close, she passed quietly and peacefully. Mrs. Shoman was born on November 17, 1929 to Carl Mock and Georgia Marie Gamel of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mrs. Shoman grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. She graduated from Central High School in Little Rock and met her husband shortly thereafter. After several years of marriage, her husband, Ernest Allen Shoman, Jr. joined the United States Army. He subsequently made the Army his career as a Nurse Anesthetist. As an Army wife, she and her family lived several places in the United States, and one tour in Italy. At each stop Jo created a warm and vibrant home for her family. Her creative talents were displayed primarily through her sewing and craft projects but also included several local theater productions. She was often found making costumes for local productions, however she also acted in a few and encouraged her children to participate as well. One of her daughters became involved in ballet for an extended period of time followed by self-employment as a sewing professional. Another daughter has enjoyed a career related to musical performance and teaching. Her other children have gone on to diverse careers in engineering, web site design and optical marketing.  Jo continued to have a passion for sewing even into her later years. When she arrived in Georgetown to live with one of her daughters, she wanted to decorate her room with some curtains of her design. So she gathered the materials and made some. Those curtains were always a source of conversation for anyone who visited her. She was known for her sense of humor, and selflessness. It was said that she never met a stranger. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.

JoAnn is lovingly remembered by her five children and grandson: L. Dianne (Mike) Frewer of Clayton, Indiana, E. Tyler (Sheryl) Shoman of Warner Robins, Georgia, Susan E. Shoman of Georgetown, South Carolina, C. Joseph Shoman of Birmingham, Alabama, and J. Andrew Shoman of Houston, Texas, and grandson, Nathan Tyler Shoman of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ernest Allen Shoman, Jr., her parents, Carl Mock and Georgia Marie Gamel, and her brother Carl Mock Gamel, Jr.
