Obituary of Tom Mayhew

Thomas “Tom” Dale Mayhew, age 77 of Gretna, Virginia died Wednesday, October 4, at his home in Pawleys Island, South Carolina surrounded by his two daughters, Dawn and Dara Mayhew.
Born October 2, 1946, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late George Dewey Mayhew, Sr. and Alice McGhee Mayhew. He was predeceased by his wife, Marsha Ann Mayhew; four brothers, Donald Mayhew, Darrell Mayhew, George D. Mayhew, Jr., and Forest Mayhew; and one sister, Ruby Pickral.
Growing up, Mr. Mayhew was a member of Zion Chapel, most recently he was a member at St Peter’s Lutheran church in Pawleys Island, and a 50-year member of the Masons, Anderson Lodge 258 A.F. & A.M.
Tommy was a retired Human Resources Executive, having spent most of his career in the carpet industry; an avid hunter his whole life; at one time held a golf handicap of 3; an angler and lover of fly-fishing, leaving his daughters a studio of exquisitely tied flies; he trained multiple bird dogs and gun dogs to blue-ribbon success; world traveller and friend. When not fly-fishing or traveling, Tommy was a dedicated college football fan.
He is survived by two daughters, Dawn Mayhew, most recently in London, England and Dara Mayhew, most recently in Charlotte, NC; one sister, Marjorie Shelton of Greensboro, NC; and a 65-pound bundle of love – a golden doodle named Beau (short for Beauregard).
Tom’s ashes were blessed by Pastor Greg Van Dyke at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pawleys Island on Thursday, October 19, prior to graveside services in Virginia. Graveside services were conducted on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Zion Chapel Cemetery by Rev Harold Thornton. Masonic Rites by Anderson Lodge 258 A.F. & A.M.
