He was born on November 7, 1919, at Cane Savannah Plantation of Sumter County, S. C., the only child of McKenzie Parker and Elizabeth Dargan Moore. "Mac," as he was known to family, friends and colleagues, grew up in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from The College of Charleston in 1941 with a B.S. degree and received his M.D. in 1944. Following an internship at City Hospital in St. Louis, MO, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army in the aftermath of World War II. He completed his residency in pathology at The Medical College in 1946 and went on to teach at The Medical College for 20 years, rising to associate professor. In 1967 he moved to Charlotte, N.C., where he worked as associate pathologist at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Healthcare System). His passion for medicine and continuing medical education led him to organize the Piedmont Pathology Club in 1973. He retired from Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1984 and continued locum tenens work at eight hospitals in North and South Carolina until 2003. In addition to his wife of 64 years, Amy Lofton Moore, he is survived by three sons: McKenzie Parker Moore III of Asheville, N.C., and his wife, Janet Smith Moore; Marion Lofton Moore of Tamuning, Guam, and his wife Toyoko Moore; Dargan Lucas Moore of Sanford, N.C., and his wife, Janet Elaine Trent; and three granddaughters, Janet Amelia Moore of Washington, D.C.; Emma McRae Trent Moore, and Elizabeth Lucas Trent Moore of Sanford, N.C. Family will receive friends at home from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, December 14. A service in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at St. James Santee Chapel of Ease in McClellanville, S.C., at 1 p.m. with a reception immediately following the service.
